Having an entrepreneurial spirit means you can be your own boss and set your schedule. This flexibility can be a major draw for women entrepreneurs, who are often responsible for childcare and caring for elderly parents or sick family members. It also allows them to pursue passion projects that may not be available in their full-time job.

While gender gaps are shrinking in education levels and vocational and technical skills, female business leaders still lack the critical experience, networks, and finance needed to grow their businesses. This can be especially difficult for women entrepreneurs whose employers do not support flexible working arrangements or who cannot access the same funding opportunities as their male counterparts.

Women in India are increasingly turning to entrepreneurship to level the playing field and boost their earning power. However, there are many hurdles to overcome, from navigating the political climate to finding reliable mentorship and funding. The good news is that there are a growing number of support mechanisms for high-impact female entrepreneurs.

The TN government is working on policies that will help promote women-led start-ups and rural communities-oriented ventures. These include an emerging sector seed fund, exceptions for government procurement from start-ups, and loan schemes under the MSME credit guarantee scheme.

Women entrepreneurs can also take advantage of the government's Startup Fund. The fund was created to help support startups and encourage women-owned businesses in India. It has been allocated INR 250 crore by the state and will be controlled by a professional financial institution. The funding will be provided to companies in sectors such as climate tech, rural tech, agri tech, and marine tech. The state will also help support business incubators that specialise in these areas.

The fund will be a major step in fostering an environment that supports high-impact female entrepreneurs, enabling them to scale their businesses and deliver transformational social and economic outcomes. Creating an entrepreneurial culture in India will not only boost the economy but also empower women. However, a comprehensive approach is needed to address all constraints that may hinder female entrepreneurship.
